LGBT History Month: Honouring Our Past, Fighting for Our Future – Explore stories, milestones, and why akt’s work is more vital than ever.

Minutes

LGBT History Month is a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made, but also on the work still left to do. akt was founded in 1989 by Cath Hall, a foster carer who saw first-hand the devastating impact of homophobia on young LGBTQ+ people. The catalyst was the tragic death of Albert Kennedy, a young gay man who lost his life after facing rejection and violence. Cath saw too many young LGBTQ+ people being cast out by their families, left vulnerable to homelessness, and knew something had to change.

What started as the UK’s first LGBTQ+ fostering service has now grown into a national charity supporting thousands of LGBTQ+ young people every year. We believed we were filling a temporary gap in services—surely, with time, things would improve. But now, 35 years later, the demand for our support is higher than ever. LGBTQ+ youth are still being forced into homelessness simply for being who they are.

This LGBT History Month, we honour the resilience of our community and the legacy of those who fought before us. And we continue to fight, because no young person should have to choose between a safe home and being themselves.
